Well, authors never used handheld it was barely supported, and manufacturers never supported it because it was barely used. [1]

Forget about meta tags and prefer the @media coupled with size query (my opinion).

I hate getting mobile versions of most sites too. Just serve the site and let the browser deal with it. Sometimes I want to zoom and pan - other times I want it reformatted into one column. Just use markup properly and no one will get hurt.

And I HATE mobile wikipedia. If it actually respected the "permanently disable" instead of expiring every so often, I'd be quite happy.

@Emanuele Aina : What it that meta tag? A way to tell the browser that your website, contrary to most ones which are badly designed, supports variable width?

*DON'T* use "max-device-width", use "max-width" instead: it just cares for the viewport size, it handles roation just fine and it's also easier to test (just resize your desktop browser window)!

Also, avoid separate stylesheets (they just increase the load time, and will get downloaded even if the query does not match).

Last, you can also use the "em" unit for your media queries, so that you can say "if the viewport has not enough space for a text line of 60 charactes, change layout".

Just tested my nokia E6, and it shows both 'handheld' and 'screen'.

I think on balance both of those are correct. It is a handheld device, and it is a visual screen. And - in common with many modern handheld devices - it's a 640x480 screen, which puts it in the same ballpark as a regular desktop screen back in 1998. Indeed, 640 pixels is more width than I'd've given any browser back then.

As Claudius said, Opera does allow rescaling, and is the only mobile browser I've seen do that. Many many sites break when you start scaling fonts or changing the width, even on desktop machines. Frankly the web developers should fix them but obviously most companies shipping browsers aren't prepared to take the blame. Maybe we should all flock to opera...

As for mobile-specific presentation: wikipedia (and quite a few other sites) do have mobile-specific versions which work nicely (even on a 5" screen the full version would be horrible).
